'Monólogos' in Spanish is what we'd call 'stand-up routines'. When we're asked to do them, for some reason they're expected to be 'about' something. I suspect this is because, rather than having grown up from grass roots level in clubs, the comedians are known here for their appearance on 'El Club de la Comedia' on Canal +, where each comedian (I use the term loosely) gets 5-7 minutes, so it's hardly possible to talk about more than one thing in that length of time.

Consequently, the list of titles on the Spanish version of this page gives the title of the 'monologue' and a bit about what it's about. When I get a chance to act somewhere where I haven't been before I allow myself to wander in and out of monologues, picking and choosing as I see fit, but for the normal circuit we stick to the themed ones, if only because that way we can at least remember which monologue we've doen in which bar in order to avoid repeating our own material. Make sense?

I'm lucky to be working in a country where they've never seen Emo Phillips, Bill Hicks or anything remotely like it. I find the comedians here to be pretty tame, to be honest, though if anyone wants to investigate HUmor Español further here are my recommendations:

Faemino y Cansado; Gomaespuma; Gila (RIP); Eugenio (ditto).
